In 2025 I was awarded the Individual Artist’s Grant from the Utah Division of Arts and Museums to build a Rocket Kiln at my home. I was fortunate enough to have a great deal of local community support in collecting the materials and to help with the construction.
Below is a time lapse of us building the Rocket Kiln!
Time lapse was collected and edited by Loy Andrus.
The Rocket Kiln is a relatively new design for a small, clean firing and environmentally friendly wood kiln which has been designed and demonstrated by Lisa Orr and Andrew Linderman. You can find the current plans and resources for Rocket Kilns here.
Since building the kiln we have fired it several times, learning best practices, and testing different glazes that I have been developing. Currently I am in a glaze chemistry course to be able to learn more about the materials I am working with and hopefully opening new possibilities in the future to experiment and work with wild materials.
Once firing the rocket kiln gets more consistent and well understood, I plan on offering workshops in the future in which students would be able to make work with me and then contribute in firing the rocket kiln. If you are interested in participating in the future, please be sure you have signed up for my emailing list to be updated when that begins!
